Eradicating Entrepreneurial Poverty: A Conversation with Ron Saharyan

On this episode of Pivot to Profit, Pam Jordan sat down with Ron Saharyan, co-founder and managing partner of Profit First Professionals, to explore his journey and the impact of the Profit First movement. Known as “Obi-Ron” by those in his community, Ron has dedicated his career to helping business owners take control of their cash flow and secure lasting financial health.

Ron’s story begins far from the world of accounting. He started as an investigator in Washington, D.C., working felony cases before shifting into staffing, where he learned the value of specialization and profitability. Over 15 years in the staffing industry, Ron mastered organizational growth, eventually realizing he wanted to help entrepreneurs directly. That turning point came when his longtime friend Mike Michalowicz shared the manuscript for Profit First. The budgeting approach reminded Ron of lessons he had learned as a child, and he knew it was a framework that could transform businesses everywhere.

Launched from Mike’s basement in 2014, Profit First Professionals has since grown into a global network of accountants, bookkeepers, and coaches who implement the Profit First methodology. Ron explained that the system is not accounting or bookkeeping—it’s a cash flow strategy that sits between financial reports and forecasting. By reallocating revenue into designated accounts for profit, owner’s pay, taxes, and operating expenses, business owners gain clarity and confidence about where their money is going.

Ron emphasized that Profit First is not just about survival—it’s a tool for growth. With cash clarity, business owners can invest in opportunities, prepare for taxes, and build long-term wealth. He also noted that while the book makes the system sound simple, implementation requires expertise. That’s why certified Profit First Professionals are essential to help entrepreneurs avoid mistakes and maximize results.

Looking ahead, Ron shared that technology will play a major role in expanding Profit First’s reach. With the launch of the Profit First app, even small businesses that aren’t ready to hire a professional can begin implementing the system and prepare for future growth.
